Fashionable Western Hats

Western hats are the classic and quintessential style of hat worn by cowboys and pioneers throughout our country’s history. The western hat is typically a high-crested, flat-brimmed hat with a large, wide-rimmed crown, usually with an attached feather and often with a pull cord to close or loosen the brim. In western style the hat may be hand crafted from cedar or other soft wood, be coloured or simple black, have ornate designs on the crown, and/or contain at least one fringe. In addition, there are many hats that are made from metal such as iron or steel. Historically the hat was most often used for warmth but today it has become fashionable to wear the hat to accent or even to define a style.

Western cowboy hats come in a variety of styles and are often decorated with metal decorations like stars or removable flecks of gold or silver. There is also a type of cowboy hats that do not crown but does have a wide brim with a wide band of either fabric or lace along the crown. Western hats can come in a large selection of colours including black, blue, charcoal, copper, fawn, grey, medium brown, pink, white, and yellow. Some also have fringe.

Western hats can be found online via a variety of websites; however, shoppers will find that there is a much greater selection of cowboy hats at hat stores throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe. When shopping online, it is important to note that not all hats are classified as western style. Many hats are classified as novelty or style. For example, a hat that has a wide brim and a small pointed or rounded brim would not normally qualify as a cowboy hat, but as a novelty or style hat. Therefore, shoppers must be aware of the difference before purchasing.
